At 4:00am I found this estute man's ideas on how to fundamentally change education for the unpredictability of our children's future. Our current educational systems, around the world, are not functioning because they were created to respond to the needs of the rise of industry. To adjust to the reality that surrounds us and the direction of future exponential change, he proposes we place as much importance on Creativity, as expressed in the arts, as we do on math and literacy.

He also has a very funny bit about imagining Shakespeare as a child, with a father telling him to "put down the pencil and go to bed," and to "stop talking like that---it scares people." Imagine you are teaching today's Shakespeare!

Ken Robinson speaks on how schools snuff out the creative impulse in students.

  1. Jerrilyn,

I just watched Ken's video. This is incredible and amazing !!!! I agree that we have to change our approach by adjusting the lenses through which we view creativity, imagination and education.

I have for a long time (before I entered education) said that what is wrong with so many people is their misdiagnosed education. While we are passed the one size fits all notions, learning styles are still not adequately considered.

We survey and try to mildly address in lesson plans. However there is just the problem of seeing that the channels of cretivity that our artists will walk down have a clear path that parents and all involved can see and know how to interact with.

There is the creativity coupled with imagination that can lift the doctor, teacher, nurse or engineer's work beyond expectation.

How do we inspire critical and imaginative thinking. I believe my own imagination comes from early critical thinking inspired by my parents, church (if you can believe it), teachers and other environmental influences...I agree with Mr. Robinson that our approach and practice must change to prepare our children for whatever teh future looks like,
